In fact, many of these helicopters resemble small airplanes complete with more fuel space and larger engines that allow them to fly at speeds that are quite fast. When you think about it, it just makes sense that the smaller the helicopter, the slower the helicopter speed and vice versa. This is also why the speeds of these choppers vary so much from one model to another and why you can always find one that accommodates your needs.

Taking the top spot for both the fastest production civilian and military helicopters the AW is a fantastic aircraft. After seeing the success of the AW in the civilian sector the military version was released in as a versatile Intermediate Twin helicopter.
With such a wide mission-capable platform its no wonder this helicopter is in service with over 45 countries! On August 11, a modified Lynx helicopter G-LYNX broke the world speed record over a 15 km course with a top speed of kts and an average of kts. The top speed of most helicopters is around the kph mark at this time mainly due to the aerodynamic drag caused by the main rotor blade tips reaching the speed of sound as they rotate and creating shockwaves that introduce huge drag.
As you may be able to see in a few of the photos, manufacturers are designing main rotor blades with odd-shaped blade tips to help overcome this, but this can only do so much. For true speed in a helicopter we are starting to see huge developments in the Hybrid, Compound, and Tilt-Rotor designs that are really pushing the speed limits. Having flown in the AW it is a great feeling to be cruising close to kts but then it really hurts when jumping into the AS with a Utility Basket and being only able to push it to kts!

Because it is going with the flow, the right side of the helicopter's blades generates more lift than its left. Of course, helicopters don't spin wildly out of control every time they fly. That's because the blades change what's known as their angle of attack , how they face the win.
Sometimes this angle is changed by pilots, other times it occurs automatically through a part of the rotor known as a swash plate. As a swash plate increases a helicopter's angle of attack, it's lift increases. But that can only take you so far. The helicopter will run into what's known as flow separation boundary where it can no longer compensate for its unequal lift.
With counter-rotating rotors, sometimes helicopters can go faster. But even they can only push against flow separation so much.
