By that point you'll also know what you a re looking for in a camera and will be able to make a wiser decision. I'll be the first to admit the D may be the first rendition this Nikon camera size to best the D40, in some ways.
However, I'm not completely convinced, the D is a better, total, balanced camera tool, for the photographer. Since this is considered a good, for starters, class of camera, I agree that the D40, at a lower price, could be better for starting and perhaps staying , for many. Of course, then there's NAS. Why not? We're now almost another four years down the road on this thread.
When I bought a d90, I gave the d40 to my daughter. When the d came out, I bought her a refurbed d and took back the d I still have it. I still use it. I still like it. I wish it would auto-focus screw-drive AF lenses, but I have the d90 for that; otherwise, I still really like that camera.
Light and compact for a DSLR, and quite happy with the kit lens for travel and everyday shooting, a for long, and a Nikon 35mm f1.
To be honest, I'm shooting micro four thirds more and more unless I"m doing something special or shooting a demanding action, high contrast, or low light situation, in which case I'll use APS-C. But occasionally I just want to use something different. Maybe 35mm film. Or maybe the d Maybe I'm just sentimental.
Every once in awhile, I wonder if I should upgrade the d40, which is now 8 years old, to a d or better. And I always come to the same conclusion. What's the point? I rarely print above 8X10, never above 13X19, and although I always shoot at the lowest ISO I can, I wouldn't hesitate to push the d40 to , if that's the only way I could get the shot. If conditions are such that I know I'll have to push to , I'll use another camera. So I'm still quite content with my d40, and expect to continue to be for some time to come.
Shreekoo 5 years ago. It would be weird to come here in and comment on a 6 year old post. I am doing it anyway. I am a penniless amateur who has been toying with light and images using all sorts of flimsy cameras except DSLRs. I finally had a little money to upgrade and got myself an unbelievably mint condition D40 with about 9K actuations.
A kind gentleman photographer sold me a VR II for a very kind price and I have been using it till now. I absolutely loved the D40 which became like an extended appendage for me over time. Gradually got a 50mm prime and a Things were going well. Then I got this offer to buy a decently used yesterday. The price was pretty attractive. I purchased it on a rash sudden decision. Got it home and tested it a bit. And I am not liking it. Although lighter than D40, it has made my remote useless and I am quite not happy with the images maybe I am just being irrational.
I even don't like the live view! I am in a quandary now. I don't do a lot of professional work. I just use photography for destressing. The D can be obtained in two different colors black, red , while the D40 is only available in black. If the front view area width x height of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon D40 is somewhat smaller 2 percent than the Nikon D However, the D40 is slightly heavier 3 percent than the D In this context, it is worth noting that neither the D nor the D40 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. In this particular case, both cameras feature the same lens mount, so that they can use the same lenses. You can compare the optics available in the Nikon Lens Catalog. The table below summarizes the key physical specs of the two cameras alongside a broader set of comparators.
If you would like to visualize and compare a different camera combination, you can navigate to the CAM-parator app and make your selection from a broad list of cameras there. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The D40 was launched at a somewhat lower price by 17 percent than the D, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget.
Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range , and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation.
Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses. Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor , but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the D40 is 4 percent bigger. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.
Both cameras have a native aspect ratio sensor width to sensor height of The Sony a7 IV is the fourth generation of the company's core a7 full-frame mirrorless camera model, and it's the most advanced yet.
