Deer usually eat twigs, leaves, grass, fruit and lichens. Deer are wild animals that cannot be domesticated. They are often on a target of hunters because of their meat and antlers, which are popular among trophy collectors. Reindeer can be domesticated and used to pull sleds and carry heavy load and people. It also represents important source of milk, fur and meat on the farms. Toggle navigation. Deer vs. Reindeer Deer is any member of the family Cervidae which includes around 90 different species of hoofed mammals. They spend the majority of their time in Arctic conditions. Whitetail deer , elk, and mule deer have a range that extends north, but not nearly so far north as caribou, which can be found deep into the Arctic Circle. Moose are the only related species with a similar range to the reindeer.
While reindeer are dwarfed by the pound moose, it is larger than most other deer species. Reindeer can weigh more than pounds though pounds is more common. Comparing deer vs reindeer, that is much larger than smaller deer species, such as red deer and fallow deer. Reindeer fur is significantly thicker than the fur of other deer species.
After all, these animals spend all their time in harsh and very cold conditions. Thicker fur lets them withstand that climate. Moose also extend to these areas but have a broader overall range. They can be found further south than reindeer. Reindeer fur is thicker than moose hair because they live in exclusively cold climates. Across the deer family, all species have less dense fur compared to reindeer. Reindeer also have hair covering their hooves. Speaking of hair, reindeer are the only deer species to have a hairy nose.
Again, this has a lot to do with the cold regions where the animal lives. Further adaptability in the nose makes living in cold climates possible. Reindeer are the only Cervidae member to have specialist turbinate bones in the nasal cavity, designed to warm cold air as the animal breathes.
Male reindeer begin to grow antlers in February and female reindeer in May. Both sexes finish growing their antlers at the same time but shed them at different times of the year.
Males drop their antlers in November, leaving them without antlers until the following spring, while females keep their antlers through the winter until their calves are born in May. Reindeer are covered in hair from their nose to the bottom of their feet hooves. The hairy hooves may look funny, but they give reindeer a good grip when walking on frozen ground, ice, mud, and snow. Reindeer are the only deer species to have hair completely covering their nose. Their good sense of smell helps the reindeer find food hidden under snow, locate danger, and recognize direction.
But with reindeer, both the bulls and the cows have them. Whitetail and reindeer males use their antlers to defend territory and display breeding fitness, and once their displays are over they shed the cumbersome growths. The female reindeer, though … they need their antlers throughout the snowy winter months, to defend their access to the low-growing mosses and lichens that form the bulk of their diet during that time.
