Oct 25, 2, Skate 3 on was my introduction to the series, and while the hammy Tony Hawksness of it wasn't the best thing it hardly got in the way of what was otherwise an incredibly tight and well designed skating game with interesting challenges and spectacular controls. After hearing so much praise for 2 and how it is leagues better than 3 I decided to play it and I don't get it.
Yeah, it's more realistic and true-to-life but in all the worst ways. Pedestrians constantly get in your way and seem to spawn purely to get in your way the longer you stay in any given area Other skaters are just as bad with their terrible AI just doing truly strange things and just generally being a nuisance.
Don't get me started on missions with cops who try and knock you over. Plain unfun and buggy as hell. Many of the challenges require a minute or two of manual setup before you can even attempt them, often not prompting the player that they cannot do the event as is So having these ramps and stuff set up to do cool stuff wouldn't be realistic enough, but having them sit barely off screen and forcing you to put them there yourself was just right?
Bailing on some missions just lets you try again, on others it fails the mission entirely and you need to restart it manually. On top of that some missions wouldn't allow you to set a marker for seemingly no reason at all. The camera and general controls are nowhere near as good as Skate 3 particularly on PS3 which is how I played Skate 2 , to the point that some of the missions were a crapshoot as to whether the trick would actually perform or if it would deem a degree off to not be the same movement.
Sometimes it would just freak out and do a simple Ollie despite putting in far more complex inputs. These are problems I never had on Skate 3 so I'm putting it on the game and not just 'git gud' on my part. Gonna go back to Skate 3 on PS3 and see if my complaints were console specific or if 2 really is just so many steps behind in general quality. But yeah, Skate 3 just seems like an infinitely superior game in every way I can think of a game being. Nikpls Member.
Oct 25, I don't get it either. LewieP Member. Oct 26, 14, It's been a while, but whilst Skate 3 was good, I remember it being goofier than prior entries. Lappe Banned. Nov 1, 1, As an ex-skateboarder of almost 20 years, Skate 2 had more weight to it, and it was more natural to do actually good looking runs with a nice flow, and I liked that the camera was a bit lower and felt like playing a an actual skateboarding video with a handheld cam. I can't really put my finger on it, It just felt better.
Had a thread about this and it's definitely better - it feels better, the map is more realistic and better to free skate in and finally the realism is there. TheInfinityGauntlet Member. Nov 3, 4, IIRC it's been a minute it had a better world to skate in If 2 had darkslides it'd be perfect you can sorta do them but it's not legit like in 3.
It definitely had the most fun world to skate in IMO. All 3 are phenomenal games though and its a big shame it went away Oct 25, 8, MrCow Member. Oct 30, Skate 2 really has the best world to skate in: Everything is interconnected and has a flow to it, similar to Dark Souls you can go anywhere without ever seeing a loading screen. Next is that the map is build on a downhill slope, so you always have some speed but it won't end in the end of the map quite as quickly as it is one large world.
The city feels more realistic in a way and encourages you to find your own creative lines with stairs and handrails and benches, instead of pre made boxes and kickers.
Also the layout of the premade rails and boxes have a really good flow to them. Still the best Area was probably the "demo" park from skate 1, perfect layout for free skating around and was later available for skate 2 which was perfect. As others have mentioned the game feel is also superior to 3 with a lowered camera and little bit more weighty feel to it.
If you're bothered by the pedestrians play in the free skate mode where you can freely set up how many other skaters and pedestrians appear in the world.
Grab your board and just roam around the city looking for cool spots and fun lines. Endless hours of fun for me but i don't know if people find the same enjoyment in it if they have never skated in real life.

I must have replayed that demo so many times before the game came out. Kept trying to get a in the pool. MMaRsu Banned. Oct 25, 1, Skate 1 and 2 are so much better than 3. Three focusses more on team play, goofiness etc. Skate 1 and 2 felt like really skating. LossAversion Member. Oct 28, 6, The series got progressively worse in terms of level design.
The world in the original Skate was fantastic. The world in Skate 3 wasn't nearly as fun to mess around in. Skate 2 sits somewhere in the middle for me. Oct 29, 2, Skate 2 is probably my 2nd favorite skateboarding game ever, right after THPS2. ActWan Banned. Oct 27, 2, Skate 2 had better spots by far! TMC Member. Though no game from the Skate franchise is available on PC, it's a more than welcome inclusion to this round of Game Pass additions. There are a lot of significant differences between the first title and its third entry, though.
Many fans consider the original Skate to be the ultimate skateboarding experience in video games; hwoever, Skate 3 has a lot to offer that the original game did not. Ultimately, it's best to try both games and see which feels better for the player — but what are the pros and cons of each?
Skate was a revolutionary game upon release. Other skateboarding games, most notably the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series , had players pull off tricks with simple button inputs that often defy real-life physics and human ability. Skate 3 has a similar problem, in that controls aren't as complex but lead to some ridiculous tricks that don't make physical sense. The original Skate , though, still stands as an incredibly satisfying skating experience. The player can't get off of their board and run around like in Skate 2 and Skate 3.
This forces players to find good trick spots while constantly on the move. The thumb stick controls were pretty well perfected in the game's simple environment, making things feel a bit more intuitive and realistic.
One of the major benefits of Skate 3 on the Xbox Game Pass is the inclusion of online playability. In Skate it is not possible to play online with others, but Skate 3 opens up this functionality to a wide range of activities.
Unfortunately, the games do not feature local multiplayer on the Xbox Game Pass. Though Skate has a few fun alternative game modes, Skate 3 still takes the prize for multiplayer. It offers a huge variety of wacky game modes and multiplayer features not present in the original title. Where Skate 2 and Skate 3 put the player in the shoes of a relatively established skater, Skate 1 starts the player at the very beginning of their journey to the top. As such, it features a lot more of the skater aesthetic.
Grungy vibes and great, subtle trick spots are absolutely everywhere on its relatively small map. It's a bit more realistic in terms of places that skaters would actually choose to try out some tricks. Where Skate 2 and Skate 3 have a lot of bizarre spots, Skate keeps things grounded. Players won't find an endless tunnel, but they might find a plaza with perfectly spaced grindable benches near a set of stairs. As typical of sequels in a game franchise, Skate 3 is miles better-looking than the original title released three years earlier.
They both came out for the same console, but Skate 3 is better optimized and makes full use of the Xbox 's capabilities.
